Rigaud a Mountain of Activities for Every Season

Rigaud, its mountain, its countryside and its rivers

Located just a bridge away from Montreal, Rigaud will surprise you with its natural beauty. Follow the trails of L'Escapade. Hike to the top of the mountain to admire the autumn colors.

Rigaud offers a variety of outdoor activities for every season : hiking, cycling, alpine and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, horse back riding, fishing, boating and bird watching.

Rigaud is a capital of ornithology. More than 256 species have been observed until now. The red headed Urubu is a bird that now nests in Rigaud every Spring since 1989.

Hydraulic force and its electricity production capacity constitute Québec's main source of energy. You can also Visit the hydroelectric power station in Carillon and its impressive locks and enjoy a picnic near the relics of the first canal on the Ottawa River. The Carillon power station is open to visitors from May to September and is accessible by ferry from Pointe-Fortune.

Founded in 1874 by the Clerics of St-Viator, the Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes Shrine is located on the flanks of Rigaud Mountain. This sanctuary of silence and prayer overlooks a most picturesque panorama. Discover the nearby Champ des guérets : according to the legend, a peasant who ploughed his potato field on Sunday offended God who punished him by transforming the potato field into a field of stone.

Rigaud's first church Ste-Madeleine de Rigaud's was built in 1821. The actual building was restored in 1918. The church is well known for its excellent acoustics.

 

How to Get to Rigaud

From Montréal

  • From downtown Montréal, get to the Métropolitain Boulevard (Highway 40 west)
  • At the junction of highway 540 (Toronto and Salaberry de Valleyfield) and highway 40 west (Ottawa-Hull), keep on going on highway 40 west toward Ottawa-Hull (about 20 kilomèters)
  • Take exit 12 (Rigaud)

  • Take St-Jean-Baptiste Street East until you get to the Church (2nd light)
  • Turn left on St-Pierre street and at about 1 kilometer, at Bourget street, you will get to College Bourget on your left.

From Ottawa

  • You take highway 40 east until exit 9
  • You take St-Jean-Baptiste Street West to the Church
  • You turn right on St-Pierre Street and at about 1 kilometer, at Bourget street, you will get to College Bourget on your left.
